Gooseberry diseases can destroy the plant and greatly reduce the number of berries. His diseases are similar to those of currant. However, his ailments are spreading more rapidly. It is required to identify the cause of the disease in time and carry out the required treatment. The article describes gooseberry diseases and ways to combat them.
Symptoms that indicate a plant is sick
Symptoms of gooseberry diseases include:
- the appearance of white plaque on the leaves;
- gooseberry leaves turn yellow, twist and dry;
- the appearance of gray spots on the leaves;
- the plant stops growing, and productivity decreases;
Sick bush
- brown coating of berries;
- the berries turn white or black;
- leaves become smaller and wrinkled;
- the berries dry and fall further.
Important! The main thing is to timely identify and begin to treat the bush. Otherwise, he will die, and the disease can go to a healthy plant.
To understand why gooseberries are falling berries and other symptoms appear, it is necessary to determine what kind of disease the bush hit and take appropriate measures.
The main diseases and treatment methods
Below are the most common diseases and what methods they can be overcome.
Anthracnose
Gooseberry anthracnose is a fungal disease. The manifestation of symptoms occurs during the flowering period. The disease reaches its peak in the second half of summer.
What does anthracnose look like?
The disease begins to spread to all parts of the plant. In the beginning, grayish spots appear on the leaves. They have a gray tubercle in which fungal spores develop. Over time, these spots begin to turn brown and grow rapidly. Due to the defeat at the bush, the growth of shoots decreases, the leaves dry out, and productivity decreases.
Important! To prevent the spread of spores, it is necessary to burn the litter. In the spring it is necessary to check the site for the presence of old leaves.
The fight against this disease is as follows:
- At the initial stage, spraying with a solution of copper sulfate is required. To do this, mix 20 g of vitriol and 5 l of water.
- If the disease continues to develop, then 1% of the Bordeaux liquid is treated. It is carried out before the bush blooms, and also after that. After the berries are picked, the bush is sprayed repeatedly.
White spotting, or septoria
Gooseberry Septoria is also a fungal disease. In early summer, the first symptoms of the disease begin to appear on the plant. Black and brown spots appear. They have a red border and the center is slightly lighter than the rest of the spot. Their shape is irregular. When the disease spreads, the fruiting body of the fungus begins to appear. As a result of the defeat, the foliage dries and falls. On diseased branches in the spring, the buds do not bloom.
For your information! In winter, the fungus lives in the bark.
To cure the bush from septoria, it is required to carry out the same measures as with anthracnose. It is also additionally required to feed the plant with fertilizers, in which there is a large amount of boron, manganese, zinc and copper.
Gooseberry mosaic
This disease only affects gooseberries. It is viral. The disease is spread by gooseberry pests: aphids, ticks, whiteflies. Also, the plant can get sick through a garden tool when pruning.
Gooseberry mosaic
Symptoms of mosaic disease are:
- a mosaic pattern appears on the leaves. The color of the picture is yellow or yellow-green;
- new shoots and the plant itself cease to grow;
- yields are greatly reduced;
- foliage shrinks and shrinks.
There are no ways to save the plant. The affected bushes are dug up and burned.
Important! Mosaic disease can be prevented. This requires regular inspection of young bushes and spraying against insects.
Ball rust
The cause of the disease is a fungus. It hibernates on fallen leaves and shallow underground. When spring comes, spores spread and fall on the bush.
This disease is the reason why gooseberries fall berries without ripening. In spring, yellow or light orange spots appear on top of the leaves. On the leaves below the bulge begins to grow, which resembles a glass. It contains spores of the fungus. If they are hurt, spores with the wind scatter and fall on healthy plants.
Than to spray gooseberries, so it is Bordeaux liquid 1%. The procedure is carried out three times: during budding, as flowering ended, one and a half weeks after the second spraying. Copper-containing fungicides can also be used.
Goblet Rust
Scab
Often gardeners have a question: gooseberry berries as if boiled, what kind of disease. This is a manifestation of scab. It is associated with damage by microscopic fungi.
What does the scab look like?
Causes of scab:
- high and prolonged humidity;
- severe temperature differences;
- excessive pruning of the bush;
- oversaturation of the soil with nitrogen;
- stagnation of moisture in the soil.
Leaves first suffer. Spots appear, which gradually increase in size. Then the berries fall ill. Then shoots are affected, their growth stops.
Treatment is possible by chemical means or alternative methods.
Chemicals:
- copper sulfate: soap (75 g) mix with water (5000 ml). Add copper sulfate (20 g);
- topaz. It is prepared according to the instructions. Processing is carried out before the plant blooms;
- Bordeaux liquid: copper sulfate (100 g), lime (100 g), water (8000 ml) are mixed.
Important! In dry weather, spraying is carried out in less quantity than in wet weather.
Treatment with folk remedies is possible at the initial stage. To do this:
- mullein solution. Mullein and water are mixed (1: 3). The bush is sprayed with the agent;
- ash solution: ash (1000 g) is mixed with water (10 l). Insist a week. Spraying is carried out every two days;
- soda solution: laundry soap (50 g) is dissolved in water (10 l). Soda (40 g) was added. Processing is carried out before flowering and after it.
Mold
Mold is the reason why gooseberries are crumbled. Its appearance is associated with the following diseases:
- powdery mildew;
- gray rot;
- goblet rust.
Ball rust was reviewed above. Powdery mildew will be discussed below. With gray rot, the berries are covered with a gray coating and begin to rot.
How to deal with gray rot on gooseberries:
- spraying with copper sulfate 3%;
- treatment with a solution of soda;
- removal of affected shoots, dried leaves and berries.
Verticillus wilting
The disease is caused by spores of the fungus that affect the roots. Leaves turn yellow and fade, but remain on the bush. At first, the disease is imperceptible, but then it develops rapidly. If you do not start treatment, then the fungus will rise to the shoots and block the entire nutrition system, as a result of which the plant will die.
Important! A sick plant is sprayed with topaz and foundationazole. It is also necessary to carry out preventive procedures: monitor cleanliness, fertilize and trim the plant.
Sphereotka (powdery mildew)
It is a fungal infection. The disease begins to affect berries, young shoots and leaves. In June, its manifestation begins. White plaque appears on the leaves, which quickly spreads to other leaves and shoots.
Powdery Mildew Disease
Then the white coating becomes gray. It becomes dense and begins to blacken. They contain spores of the fungus. They are easily carried by wind to other crops. Due to this disease, the leaves do not grow, dry and curl. The fruits also do not grow, they are completely covered by rot. They dry, crack and fall off. If not treated, the bush dies after two years.
With symptoms of damage, it is necessary to spray the bushes with phytosporin, Bordeaux liquid, spores. Spraying is carried out up to four times when the bush is severely affected: before flowering and after it, after harvesting and another one and a half weeks later.
Important! If the lesion is mild, it can be treated with infusion of ash or hay.
Prevention
To prevent the occurrence of diseases, preventive care is required. It is as follows:
- it is worth choosing the varieties that are most resistant to disease;
- it is required to observe the minimum necessary distance between the bushes so that they have enough nutrients in the soil;
- gooseberries need to be fed, but, most importantly, not to overdo it;
- to loosen the earth under bushes after watering;
- carry out autumn and spring pruning. Remove suspicious shoots;
- it is required to burn leaves that have fallen, and cut branches;
- pour boiling water over the gooseberries until the kidneys open. To carry out the processing of Bordeaux liquid and other means of copper in the spring;
- plant garlic, dill, chrysanthemums and marigolds next to the plant. They scare away pests.
Important! Gooseberries can be susceptible to various diseases. If you do not fight them in time, then the bush may die. It is better to take preventive measures to prevent diseases than to try to cure the bush later.
